3 Decades of Covers by Marian Bond

The picture of the Appaloosa mare and baby that appeared on the cover of Horse & Rider in March of 1973 was taken in La Habra Heights, CA. I remember sitting for hours in the corral waiting for the right shots using my twin lens reflex Yashica camera. This was my first cover with Horse & Rider, but over the years many articles and photos appeared in this publication--and often I had a cover.

One year later, March of 1974, I happened to notice in the Los Angeles Times Home magazine in a pet column an illustration of an Appaloosa mare and baby drawn by Robert B. Rodriguez. There was no question but that Mr. Rodriguez had used my photo as a basis for his drawing.

Rod Kelley is a trainer in Southern California, and one of the many I interviewed and photographed when I was writing training articles for the equestrian publications.

Jimmy Williams was one of the most highly recognized trainers of hunter jumpers in Southern California. Here he is pictured with one of his assistants.

I was at Jimmy's ranch in La Canada Flintridge many times to do interviews with him and some of his outstanding students.
